Even great footage can look amateur with poor editing. Here are the seven most common mistakes and how to avoid them.
1. Over-Using Transitions
Star wipes and spinning transitions scream amateur. Use simple cuts for most transitions, and save fancy effects for specific moments.
2. Ignoring Audio
Bad audio ruins good video. Always check your audio levels and consider adding background music to cover ambient noise.
3. Clips That Run Too Long
Hold each shot only as long as it needs to make its point. For social media, 2–4 seconds per clip is usually ideal.
4. Jump Cuts Without Purpose
Random jump cuts are jarring. Use them intentionally for effect, or hide them with B-roll footage.
5. Inconsistent Color
Different clips shot at different times look mismatched. Apply consistent color grading across all clips.
6. Forgetting About Pacing
Every video needs rhythm. Alternate between fast-paced and slower sections to keep the viewer engaged.
7. Wrong Export Settings
Exporting at the wrong resolution or aspect ratio wastes your hard work. Always export at 1080p minimum for social media.
