Smooth transitions are what separate amateur content from professional-looking videos. On mobile, you can achieve cinema-quality transitions with the right technique.
In-Camera Transitions
The smoothest transitions are captured during filming, not added in post. These require no special effects — just practice.
The Hand Cover
Cover the lens with your hand at the end of one scene. Start the next scene with your hand covering the lens and pull it away.
The Swipe
Quickly swipe your phone in one direction. Match the direction when starting the next clip.
The Snap
Snap your fingers in frame. Cut to the next scene on the snap. It creates a magical teleportation effect.
Post-Production Transitions
- Cross dissolve: The subtle, professional default
- Speed ramp: Speed up the end and beginning of adjacent clips
- Zoom: Punch in on clip A, punch out from clip B
Golden Rule
The best transition is the one the viewer doesn't notice. Use cuts for 90% of your transitions and save effects for moments that deserve emphasis.
