Smartphone Video Stabilization Tips

Smooth, stable footage is one of the most visible differences between amateur and professional video. Here's how to achieve it on your phone.

Without Equipment

  • Two-hand grip: Hold your phone with both hands, elbows tucked into your body
  • Walk heel-to-toe: Roll your foot from heel to toe when walking to reduce bounce
  • Bend your knees: Slightly bent knees act as natural shock absorbers
  • Use a surface: Rest your phone on a table, ledge, or any stable surface when possible
  • Turn on OIS: Enable optical image stabilization in your camera settings

With a Tripod

A $15 phone tripod eliminates shake for stationary shots. Essential for time-lapses, talking head videos, and product shots.

With a Gimbal ($50–150)

A gimbal uses motors to actively stabilize your phone. It creates buttery smooth footage even while walking, running, or moving dynamically.

Software Stabilization

Many editing apps offer digital stabilization that smooths footage in post-production. It works by cropping slightly to remove shake.

The Slow-Motion Trick

Slight camera shake becomes less noticeable in slow motion. If your footage is a bit shaky, applying a subtle slow-motion effect with FXMotion can smooth it out visually.
