The "cinematic" look is achievable on any modern smartphone. It comes down to four elements: movement, framing, lighting, and editing.
Camera Movement
- Slow, deliberate movements: Fast, jerky movement looks amateur. Move slowly and intentionally
- Follow your subject: Track alongside moving subjects for dynamic shots
- Push in/pull out: Slowly move toward or away from your subject for dramatic effect
- Stabilize: Hold with both hands, arms tucked to your body. A gimbal is ideal but not required
Cinematic Framing
- Shoot in 24fps: This is the classic film frame rate that gives footage a "movie" feel
- Use the 2.35:1 aspect ratio: Add letterbox bars in post for a widescreen cinematic look
- Shallow depth of field: Use Portrait mode or get close to your subject with a blurred background
- Leave headroom: Don't center faces — use the rule of thirds
The Cinematic Edit
- Add slow-motion to key dramatic moments using EvoMotion
- Apply a cinematic color grade (desaturated with crushed blacks)
- Use slow, smooth transitions
- Add an epic soundtrack that matches the mood
