Shooting video in low light is challenging, but with the right editing techniques, you can dramatically improve the quality of your night footage.
Common Low-Light Problems
- Noise/grain: Cameras increase ISO in low light, creating digital noise
- Motion blur: Slower shutter speeds cause blur during movement
- Color casts: Artificial lighting creates unnatural color tones
- Lost detail: Dark areas lose texture and information
Editing Fixes
- Lift shadows carefully: Increase brightness in dark areas, but not too much or noise becomes visible
- Reduce noise: Apply noise reduction before other edits
- Correct white balance: Remove color casts from street lights or indoor lighting
- Add contrast: Low-light footage often looks flat — boosting contrast adds depth
- Desaturate slightly: Reducing saturation can make noise less noticeable
Prevention Is Better Than Cure
When possible, add light sources. Even a small LED panel makes a huge difference. Shoot near windows, street lights, or neon signs for more interesting low-light content.
